BECOMING WE

In each other's arms the two lovers lay, side-by-side and sleeping
Now a memory and now a dream of happy tears a-weeping
Moments ago-or was it a lifetime-beneath the old oak tree
The two who had been just she-and-she had suddenly become we

It hadn't started out that way, they came to sit and talk and drink
They came to figure out who they were, and to dream, and play, and think
One glass of wine-perhaps they'd two-it didn't matter any more
For love peeked in and she turned their heads, opening a one-way door

Forever changed, the two of them lay now in lover's slumber-land
One head upon the other's shoulder, four hands clasped as never planned
It was just a moment's pleasure that was all it was meant to be
Instead their hearts were melded as one, as she-and-she became we
